Opel has added a new entry-level Start trim to the recently facelifted Astra lineup, reducing the hatchback’s starting price by €1,600. The mild-hybrid version begins at €31,890, equivalent to approximately $35,700, although the new base model still includes a broad range of standard equipment.
The Start trim sits below the Astra Edition and flagship Astra GSE. Its most visible cost-saving measure is a set of 16-inch steel wheels with multi-spoke hubcaps and high-profile tires, giving the hatchback a distinctly traditional appearance. The Edition trim’s 16-inch alloy wheels are the primary exterior feature missing from the new entry-level model.
Standard exterior and cabin equipment
Despite its steel wheels, the Astra Start retains the facelifted model’s sculpted bumpers, integrated rear spoiler, and LED taillights. LED headlights and an illuminated Opel Vizor grille are also standard, with the grille using small cooling intakes on versions powered by an internal-combustion engine.
Denim Blue Metallic is included at no extra cost, while other exterior colors are available as paid options. Inside, the Start trim comes with a digital cockpit featuring two 10-inch displays. It also includes six-way manually adjustable Intelli-Seats for the front occupants, automatic climate control, keyless start, LED cabin lighting, a four-speaker audio system with DAB+, and a multifunction steering wheel.
Unlike the lower-priced Frontera Start, which replaces its infotainment screen with a smartphone mount, the Astra Start keeps its dual-display digital cockpit.
Safety equipment and optional package
The standard safety equipment includes the driver-assistance systems required by European legislation. A rearview camera remains reserved for higher trim levels, but front and rear parking sensors are included with the Astra Start.
Buyers can add the Start Comfort Pack for €500 on the hatchback or €650 on the Sports Tourer wagon. The package adds heat-insulating glass, an automatically dimming rearview mirror, and a center armrest. On the wagon, it also includes roof rails.
Three automatic powertrain choices
Opel offers the Astra Start with three powertrain options, all paired with automatic transmissions rather than a manual gearbox.
The mild-hybrid option uses a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine producing 143 horsepower and connected to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The diesel version produces 130 hp and uses an eight-speed automatic.
The fully electric Astra Start has a single motor producing 154 hp. Its 55.4-kWh battery provides a WLTP range of 282 miles.
Pricing and available upgrades
The mild-hybrid Astra Start carries a starting price of €31,890, or about $35,700. Additional paint costs €750, while 16-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires add €800.
The Sports Tourer wagon costs €1,500 more than the hatchback before options. As a result, buyers choosing the wagon with the Comfort Pack would pay an additional €2,150 over the standard hatchback’s starting price, before selecting other upgrades.
