French police stopped a 48-year-old Swiss driver after recording his Porsche 911 GT3 at 194 mph (312 km/h) on the A40 highway in Haute-Savoie, where the speed limit is 81 mph (130 km/h).

The Porsche appears to be a 991.1-generation 911 GT3, whose listed top speed is 195 mph (315 km/h). The French Gendarmerie de la Haute-Savoie published images of the car and the radar equipment used to record its speed.

License revoked and Porsche impounded

Around five percent was deducted from the radar reading as a tolerance, reducing the recorded speed for enforcement purposes to 186 mph (300 km/h). Police described that figure as the highest speed they have detected in France, surpassing an Audi RS3 recorded at 178 mph (287 km/h) earlier this year.

The driver’s license was immediately revoked, and he was required to pay a €1,500 ($1,675) bond. The suspension is understood to apply only in France. His Porsche was towed and taken to an impound facility.

Court appearance scheduled

According to local reporting, the driver is due to appear in a French court in February. He could face a fine of up to €3,750 ($4,200) and as much as three months in prison, depending on the court’s findings.

The radar reading may also be challenged. Local media reports that the equipment used to record the Porsche was approved for speeds of up to 186 mph (300 km/h), creating a potential technical issue that could affect any prosecution.
