Fiat is preparing to introduce the Multiplay concept at the Paris Motor Show, reviving the Multipla name for a vehicle unlike either of its predecessors. Rather than a minivan, the new study is described as combining SUV comfort with the open cargo area and outdoor flexibility of a pickup.
The concept’s teaser provides only a limited view of its design. It centers on an oval-shaped insert that appears likely to sit on the vehicle’s side profile. The element features a contemporary black pattern, a body-colored section, and silhouettes referencing both the original 600 Multipla and the later Multipla.
A pickup and SUV in one concept
Fiat describes the Multiplay as a flexible and accessible mobility concept focused on practical everyday use. Its body configuration is intended to accommodate different needs, with the open load space of a pickup paired with the comfort and adaptability associated with an SUV.
According to Fiat’s description, those configurations could be changed using an “ingenious mechanism” in only a few movements. The automaker also suggests that the concept may point toward a production vehicle, saying it could establish a new category as the boundaries between family activities, recreation, work, and adventure become less distinct.
Fiat further characterizes the Multiplay as inspiration for future products that could expand its affordable family transportation lineup. That wording leaves a production version unconfirmed, although the concept’s combination of SUV and pickup functions suggests a direction for the brand’s future range.
Possible connection to Fiat’s recent pickup study
The Multiplay may share the broader idea behind Fiat’s Panda-themed Concept Pick-Up shown in 2024. It could also become related to the upcoming Grizzly and Grizzly Fastback production SUVs, though the source does not establish a definitive connection between those vehicles.
If that relationship develops, the Multiplay could use Stellantis’ Smart Car architecture. The platform is compatible with gasoline, mild-hybrid, and fully electric powertrains, but Fiat has not specified a powertrain for this concept or confirmed production plans.
The Multipla name returns
Fiat first used the Multipla name for the 600 Multipla introduced in 1955. The compact model had a cab-over layout, measured 3.5 meters (137.8 inches) in length, and provided three rows with seating for six people.
The name returned in 1998 after being previewed by a 1996 concept. That Multipla was a compact minivan with two rows and room for six occupants within a 3,994-millimeter (157.2-inch) body. Its unusual shape and two-level headlight design made it one of Fiat’s most distinctive models and later helped it develop a cult following.
Fiat’s new Multiplay concept will show whether the brand can apply that earlier focus on compact, clever packaging to a vehicle that combines pickup cargo capability with SUV usability.
