Fiat has presented the Multiplay, a modular concept that combines the space of a minivan, the appearance of an SUV and the utility of a pickup. The 3-in-1 vehicle is being shown at the Paris Motor Show as a study focused on family use, work and outdoor activities.
Although Fiat says the Multiplay does not preview a specific production model, its design explores solutions that could influence future vehicles. The concept can change between a three-row family-oriented configuration and a four-seat, dual-cab pickup through an architecture called “Metamorfosi.”
A sliding roof transforms the rear section
In SUV form, the Multiplay measures 4.45 meters (172.5 inches) long and offers a 6+1 seating arrangement across three rows. The vehicle’s compact length is shorter than a Jeep Compass, while its seating layout references the six-passenger capacity of the original 1955 Fiat 600 Multipla and the six-seat arrangement of the 1998 Fiat Multipla.
To create the pickup configuration, the rear portion of the roof slides forward along with the third row. This leaves an open cargo bed behind the four remaining seats. The truck setup includes a split tailgate, a retractable bed cover and a modular floor designed to help secure loads.
The roof spoiler also rotates to reveal an integrated rack capable of carrying two bicycles. These features give the concept a lifestyle-oriented focus without requiring a separate pickup and family vehicle.
Distinctive design and interior details
The Multiplay appears related to Fiat’s 2024 Concept Pick-Up, but it has a shorter hood, a different greenhouse and revised lighting. Its pixel-style LEDs echo those used on the Grande Panda, while generous ground clearance and black wheel-arch cladding give the vehicle crossover-minivan proportions.
Inside, the cabin uses orange upholstery with green accents, including the second-row “Petsenger seat.” That position lacks a conventional seatback and is intended for pets. The dashboard is described as futuristic and features an ultra-wide display, while the steering wheel uses a yoke-style design.
The front passenger seat can fold into a recliner, working with a cylindrical pillow integrated into the dashboard. The arrangement adds another example of the concept’s emphasis on flexible use of its interior space.
Powertrain remains unspecified
Fiat has not disclosed the Multiplay’s underpinnings or powertrain. Because the concept has no room for a combustion engine at the front, it is considered most likely to be electric, although that has not been confirmed.
Fiat describes the vehicle as a “laboratory of solutions for tomorrow’s mobility” rather than a direct preview of a production vehicle. The source material also points to the possibility of a future unibody pickup using the underpinnings of the Grizzly and Grizzly Fastback, but no such model has been announced. A production version of the 2024 Concept Pick-Up could instead use the Smart Car architecture, which supports gasoline, mild-hybrid and fully electric powertrains.
