The Chevrolet Bolt’s return appears to be ending far sooner and on a much smaller scale than expected. Production has reportedly been reduced by about 75%, with roughly 35,000 vehicles now expected to be built before the model leaves production in the first quarter of 2027.

The Bolt previously ranked among America’s most popular electric vehicles, but General Motors ended production of the Bolt and Bolt EUV as it prepared Orion Assembly to build full-size electric trucks. Plans for the facility changed after the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV failed to generate the expected enthusiasm. Following several delays, GM instead moved to retool Orion for internal-combustion trucks and SUVs.

A limited return for the Bolt

During that period of uncertainty, Chevrolet brought the Bolt back with several updates and shifted production to a new facility in Kansas. The automaker described the revived model as a “limited run” vehicle, though the latest reported production figures suggest the run could be substantially smaller than initially intended.

GM was reportedly targeting production of 150,000 units. However, Reuters reports that the company has cut that figure by approximately three-quarters. GM did not comment on the production numbers, but told the publication, “We continuously evaluate market dynamics and customer demand.”

Sales have remained weak. Chevrolet sold 4,224 Bolts during the first half of the year, putting the model on pace for fewer than 9,500 sales over the full year.

2025 Bolt specifications and pricing

The returned Bolt starts at $27,600, excluding a $1,395 destination charge. Its equipment includes a 65-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack and an electric motor rated at 210 horsepower and 169 pound-feet of torque. Chevrolet lists a maximum driving range of 262 miles on a full charge.

The source material does not identify a single reason for the revived Bolt’s poor sales. The removal of the federal tax credit may have contributed, while the vehicle’s close visual resemblance to the previous model and limited promotion also may have worked against it.

By comparison, Chevrolet’s Equinox EV has found stronger acceptance from consumers. The electric crossover starts at $34,995 before an $1,800 destination charge and offers up to 319 miles of range.
