BYD has introduced the Atto 8 to European audiences at the Paris Motor Show, presenting a three-row electric SUV with up to 764 horsepower and charging performance that could make refueling times a central part of its appeal. Using BYD’s Flash Charging system, the Atto 8 can reportedly charge from 10 to 97 percent in nine minutes.

The Atto 8 is BYD’s first three-row vehicle for Europe and is expected to compete with the new Skoda Peaq. Its exterior design draws from styling elements already used across BYD’s lineup, while the more significant developments are found in its battery, charging system and powertrain choices.

Two powertrains, one 115-kWh battery

Both versions use BYD’s second-generation Blade battery with a 115-kWh capacity. The entry-level Design model pairs that battery with a 456-hp (462-PS, 340-kW) electric motor driving the rear wheels. Despite its output, the SUV’s substantial battery contributes to a claimed 0-to-62-mph time of eight seconds.

The Atto 8 Excellence adds a second electric motor and all-wheel drive, raising total output to 764 hp (775 PS, 570 kW). Its claimed sprint time drops to 4.6 seconds, although the additional motor reduces the vehicle’s stated range.

BYD lists up to 405 miles (652 kilometers) of range for the rear-wheel-drive model. The dual-motor Excellence is quoted at up to 374 miles (602 kilometers) on a full charge.

Flash Charging remains limited

The headline charging figures depend on access to a BYD Flash charger. The company’s network is still limited, although BYD says 3,000 Flash stations are expected to be operating across Europe by the end of 2027.

On a compatible charger, the Atto 8 can charge from 10 to 70 percent in almost half the time required for the 10-to-97-percent session, since charging slows during the final portion. BYD also cites a 20-to-97-percent charging time of 12 minutes in temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius. For comparison, the new Skoda Peaq is listed with a 10-to-80-percent charging time of 28 minutes.

Standard equipment and European timing

The nearly 198-inch, or 5-meter, SUV includes a panoramic glass roof, a 26-inch head-up display and heated, ventilated and massaging front seats. The outer seats in the second row also receive heating, ventilation and massage functions, while both versions include dual 50-watt smartphone charging pads.

The Excellence model further adds a refrigerator. BYD is expected to provide more details about pricing and value closer to the Atto 8’s planned European sales start in spring 2027.
