BMW has revealed the combustion-powered 2027 3-Series, introducing an updated version of the outgoing model’s platform, a cabin based on the brand’s latest electric vehicles, and up to 437 horsepower in the range-topping M350 xDrive. U.S. sales of the 330, 330 xDrive, and M350 xDrive are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

The gasoline sedan shares much of its exterior design with the recently unveiled electric i3. Its front end uses similar kidney grilles and daytime running lights, although the grilles on the 3-Series are darker and slightly wider. The combustion models also receive more prominent lower openings to provide engine cooling.

Subtle exterior differences

Compared with the i3, the gas-powered 3-Series has a slightly longer, lower hood and revised rear side-window shaping. The Hofmeister kink remains part of the profile. The M350 xDrive adds black mirror caps, distinct badging, darkened LED taillights, a diffuser, and quad exhaust outlets.

The confirmed 330, 330 xDrive, and M350 xDrive are each 187.2 inches long, 72.8 inches wide, and 57.3 inches tall. The i3 50 xDrive is slightly longer, wider, and taller. That difference reflects the two cars’ underlying architectures: the 3-Series uses an updated CLAR platform, while the i3 is built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform.

Neue Klasse-inspired interior

Although its architecture is carried over in revised form, the 3-Series receives the interior technology introduced with BMW’s Neue Klasse-based electric models. Equipment includes a steering wheel with touchpad controls and paddle shifters, a slanted 17.9-inch infotainment display, and the Panoramic iDrive system. An optional 3D head-up display is also available.

The dashboard has been redesigned with new materials, fabric, and lighting. New seats are standard, while multifunction seats are optional and add backrest-width adjustment and lumbar support. The M350 xDrive uses M Sport seats with more pronounced bolsters.

M350 xDrive leads the initial lineup

Until the next M3 arrives, the M350 xDrive will be the most powerful combustion 3-Series. It combines a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology to produce 437 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed Steptronic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard.

The M350 xDrive can reach 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and has a 130-mph top speed, increasing to 155 mph with sport tires. With a one-foot rollout included, its stated 0-to-60-mph time drops to 3.6 seconds.

The 330 and 330 xDrive use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Both models have a 5.9-second 0-to-60-mph time, while their top speeds match the M350 xDrive.

Chassis updates and Drift Moment

BMW has made extensive chassis changes despite retaining the CLAR architecture. The revisions include a double-joint spring-strut front axle, wider front and rear tracks, and new wheel and tire combinations. Adaptive suspension is available on standard models, while adaptive M suspension comes standard on the M350 xDrive.

The M350 xDrive also introduces Drift Moment, a mode that changes the sedan to rear-wheel drive. It is not available at launch, however, and is expected to arrive through a software update at an undisclosed time next year.

The new 3-Series includes Level 2 driver-assistance technology and Symbiotic Drive, which allows drivers to provide steering, acceleration, and braking inputs without the system disengaging. U.S. pricing has not yet been announced.
