Sam Mayer’s next move is already settled, even though he still has two seasons left to run with Haas Factory Team. After the 2026 NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series season, Mayer will return to JR Motorsports and take over the No. 1 Chevrolet for 2027.

The deal brings a familiar driver back to the Earnhardt-owned organization. Mayer previously raced for JR Motorsports from 2021 through 2024, making this less of a dramatic reunion and more of a carefully planned return to a team he already knows. Starkey will support him as the primary sponsor for most of the 2027 season.

A Familiar Chevrolet Awaits

Mayer’s move is notable because it gives both driver and team something increasingly valuable in NASCAR: continuity. He won’t be arriving at JR Motorsports cold, trying to learn a new group of engineers, a new communication style, and a new way of preparing race cars while also learning a new competitive environment. He has already spent four seasons inside the organization.

That previous relationship should make the transition rather less of a bureaucratic faff than the average driver change. Mayer understands the team’s operation, while JRM knows how he works. By announcing the return well before the 2027 season, the organization also has time to plan its technical and commercial program around him rather than waiting until the last possible moment, as racing teams occasionally do with all the grace of a man searching for his keys in a dark garage.

The 2027 car will carry the No. 1, a familiar JRM entry that gives the announcement an immediate visual connection to the team’s existing identity. Mayer’s Chevrolet will also carry Starkey branding for the majority of the season, providing the commercial foundation for the program.

Mayer’s JRM Chapter Is Not Quite Finished

Mayer’s first spell with JR Motorsports ran from 2021 through 2024. His return does not begin until after the 2026 season, so the announcement is about the future rather than an immediate change to the current driver lineup. Mayer will remain with Haas Factory Team through the end of that season.

That timing matters. Driver announcements made this far ahead of a season are often as much about long-term planning as they are about headline value. The team can secure a known quantity, sponsors can organize their programs, and the driver can focus on the job in front of him without spending an entire season answering questions about where he might end up next.

It also leaves Mayer with a clear two-year window at Haas Factory Team before the return takes effect. Nothing about the announcement suggests an immediate break or a midseason shuffle. His current commitment remains in place through 2026, followed by a return to the organization where he spent the first portion of his NASCAR career.

Why the Return Makes Sense for JR Motorsports

JR Motorsports has long operated as one of the major development and competition organizations in NASCAR’s Xfinity-level racing, producing a mixture of young talent, established names, and Chevrolet-backed programs. Bringing back a driver with prior team experience gives the organization a known reference point when shaping its 2027 plans.

That does not guarantee results. NASCAR has a habit of treating guarantees with the same respect a short-track bumper gives a pristine rear quarter panel. Cars, regulations, personnel, sponsorship arrangements, and the strength of the field can all change before Mayer takes the green flag in the No. 1.

Still, the basic logic is sound. JRM is not taking a gamble on an entirely unknown pairing, and Mayer is not moving into an organization with which he has no history. The value lies in reducing the number of variables. In a series where small gains in setup, pit-road execution, tire management, and qualifying preparation can separate a front-running weekend from a frustrating one, familiarity is useful currency.

Starkey Adds Stability to the 2027 Program

Starkey’s role is another important part of the agreement. The company will serve as Mayer’s primary sponsor for most of the 2027 season, giving the No. 1 Chevrolet a consistent commercial identity rather than a collection of one-off paint schemes assembled race by race.

For teams and drivers, a primary sponsor covering the majority of a season provides more than logo placement. It creates a stable platform for marketing, hospitality, activation, and long-range planning. It also means the driver’s future program is not dependent on solving a fresh sponsorship puzzle before every event. That is useful in any racing series, and particularly so in a national NASCAR program where operating costs are substantial and the calendar is demanding.

The announcement does not specify the full financial terms of the deal or identify any additional sponsors that may appear on the car. Those details can come later. For now, the central points are clear: Mayer is returning to JRM, the No. 1 Chevrolet is his future ride, and Starkey is attached to the program for most of the season.

A Long Runway Before the Reunion

There is an unusual amount of time between the announcement and the first race of Mayer’s new JRM deal. That gives the arrangement an almost old-fashioned quality. The driver can finish his current commitment properly, the team can build its 2027 operation without panic, and the sponsor has time to make the partnership visible well before the cars roll onto the grid.

For Mayer, the challenge will be to make the intervening seasons count. Returning to a former team can generate warm feelings, but NASCAR does not award points for nostalgia. When 2027 arrives, the No. 1 Chevrolet will have to be fast, dependable, and properly prepared from the first practice session.

Even so, the foundation is straightforward. Sam Mayer knows JR Motorsports. JR Motorsports knows Sam Mayer. Starkey provides a major part of the sponsorship package. And unlike many driver-market stories that leave everyone staring at a cloud of question marks, this one ends with a clearly labeled destination: Mayer will be back in the No. 1 JRM Chevrolet for the 2027 NASCAR season.
