A one-off Land Rover Series III creation known as the “Slamd-Rover” combines the body of a classic British off-roader with the shortened chassis and air-cooled mechanicals of a Volkswagen Beetle. The heavily modified vehicle is currently listed on eBay for £15,000, or approximately $20,000.

The project began with a 2020 purchase of an unfinished build. Its current owner completed the vehicle with assistance from UK-based Dropworks Customs and Lowdown Transporters. Although the Volkswagen donor was registered as a 1968 model, only a small number of its original components remain.

Shortened chassis and air suspension

The Beetle-based underpinnings have been shortened and fitted with remotely controlled four-way air suspension. At its lowest setting, the vehicle sits close to the pavement, leaving little practical ground clearance. The source notes that it cannot clear a standard speed bump, making it unsuitable for the off-road use associated with a conventional classic Land Rover.

Its air-cooled theme continues with a set of 17-inch Porsche alloy wheels. A matching spare is mounted on the hood, adding to the unusual combination of Land Rover bodywork and Volkswagen-based hardware.

Land Rover body with custom details

The body comes from a Land Rover Series III and is finished in matte green. A beige roof sourced from a rare Safari model has been chopped, while most of the glass has been removed. The split windscreen and the vehicle’s Alpine windows are the exceptions.

Inside, the cabin features a custom bench seat, a wooden steering wheel, three instruments and a high-mounted gear shifter. The rear area, traditionally used for storage in a Land Rover, has been reworked to accommodate the engine.

Volkswagen Type 2 engine

Power comes from a 1.6-liter air-cooled flat-four taken from a Volkswagen Type 2 Bus. The engine uses twin carburetors, 3D-printed velocity stacks and a custom exhaust system with twin tailpipes.

The eBay listing describes the “Slamd-Rover” as a vehicle intended to provoke strong reactions from Land Rover enthusiasts and says it can be delivered anywhere in the UK. International shipping is also available at an additional cost.
