A rare Mercedes CLK DTM AMG formerly owned by 2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button is heading to auction. One of just 100 examples built, the right-hand-drive coupe has covered 11,255 miles and is expected to bring between $530,000 and $663,000 at Iconic Auctioneers’ November 2026 sale.
Button bought the car new in 2004 and kept it until 2019, when it was sold to a Japanese collector. Its ownership history now gives prospective buyers an unusual connection to one of the most exclusive AMG-based road cars of its era.
One of 100 CLK DTM road cars
The CLK DTM AMG was created to celebrate Bernd Schneider’s dominant 2003 season in Germany’s DTM touring car championship. Although the car carries the AMG name, production was subcontracted to HWA, the company responsible for running Mercedes’ AMG racing programs at the time.
Its appearance closely followed Schneider’s race car, with wide fender extensions, a prominent rear wing, and multi-spoke wheels. Weight-saving measures included composite construction for the hood, fenders, doors, front bumper, rear apron, and wing. The front bucket seats also used composite materials, while the rear seats were removed.
Supercharged V8 power
Unlike the naturally aspirated 5.4-liter V8 in the regular CLK55 AMG, the CLK DTM received a supercharged version of the engine. Output rose to 582 horsepower, enabling a claimed 0-to-100-kph time of 3.9 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 199 mph.
The car’s performance remains notable alongside a newer Mercedes-AMG model mentioned as a possible spiritual successor. The 2027 Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 is described as producing 646 horsepower from a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, but its 3.9-second run to 62 mph and 193-mph top speed do not surpass the older CLK DTM’s quoted figures.
Whether Button’s former car achieves the upper end of its auction estimate will depend on bidders when it returns to the market in November 2026.
