Chery has released key specifications for the Stockman, its upcoming plug-in hybrid pickup aimed at markets including Australia. The truck is scheduled to begin customer deliveries early next year and will launch with a turbo-diesel powertrain rather than a gasoline-based plug-in hybrid system.

The Stockman evolved from the KP31 concept previewed in February. Its drivetrain combines a 2.5-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 34-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery. The system is rated at 469 horsepower and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque.

More torque than the BYD Shark 6

The Stockman’s power output matches the flagship BYD Shark 6, which is rated at 469 hp (350 kW). Chery’s pickup, however, produces 74 lb-ft (100 Nm) more torque than the Shark 6’s 516 lb-ft (700 Nm).

Towing capacity is rated at 7,705 pounds (3,495 kg), placing the Stockman level with several established and emerging competitors, including the Shark 6 Performance, Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Kia Tasman, and Mazda BT-50.

Off-road equipment and electric range

Chery says the Stockman will come standard with front, center, and rear locking differentials. The pickup will also use all-terrain tires, double-wishbone front suspension, and rear leaf springs.

The plug-in system is expected to provide up to 60 miles (96 km) of all-electric driving. That range could make the diesel-electric pickup suitable for urban trips while retaining its towing-focused configuration.

Other listed equipment includes a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, a 14-speaker audio system, and a full suite of advanced driver-assistance systems.

Gasoline plug-in hybrid to follow

Pricing has not been specified in the supplied details. The Stockman’s closest identified rival, the Shark 6 Performance, starts at $62,900, giving Chery a reference point as it positions the new pickup in the market.

A gasoline-powered plug-in hybrid version is set to arrive after the diesel model. That variant will use independent rear suspension instead of the diesel Stockman’s leaf-spring arrangement.
