Chery has unveiled the Omoda X, a RAV4-sized SUV concept featuring rugged styling, fully electric and plug-in hybrid powertrain options, and thermal-imaging night vision. The model was shown during the Chery Group’s International User Summit in Wuhu, China.
The infrared night-vision system is the first of its kind offered in a Chery product. It can detect wildlife and pedestrians up to 90 meters away in low-light conditions, potentially giving drivers more time to react to hazards on the road. It is not yet clear whether the system will be offered as standard equipment on the production model.
Rugged exterior dimensions
The Omoda X introduces Chery’s “Crossvolution” design language, which draws inspiration from mecha culture. Its exterior features angular bodywork, three-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels, and sharply styled LED lighting at both ends.
Measuring 4,650 mm in length, the SUV occupies the same broad size category as models including the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, Honda CR-V, and Mazda CX-5. Squared-off wheel arches, all-terrain tires, aluminum-style skid plates, and roof rails give the concept a more off-road-oriented appearance.
Chery says the Omoda X has 200 mm of ground clearance, a wading depth exceeding 700 mm, and a towing capacity of 1,800 kg. Those figures give it greater claimed wading and towing capability than the source’s cited rugged versions of the Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester, although those rivals offer more ground clearance.
Planned cabin and powertrains
The interior has not been shown in photographs, but Chery has described a futuristic “Mecha Command Cockpit.” Planned elements include an X-shaped floating center console, an aircraft-inspired layout, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13.2-inch infotainment screen, and physical climate controls.
The cabin is also expected to include 39 storage compartments. Chery has not released full powertrain specifications, but the Omoda X is confirmed to offer fully electric and plug-in hybrid versions with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. An X-Mode system will allow drivers to adjust vehicle settings and performance.
Although the concept has been revealed in China, it could eventually be offered in export markets and positioned below the Omoda 9. The Omoda and Jaecoo brands are already sold in Australia, Europe, and the UK.
