Volkswagen has updated the Grand California campervan for 2027 with a new Dune Special Edition, additional interior equipment, optional solar power, and lower UK pricing. The flagship camper remains available in two body lengths and continues to use a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine.
The Grand California was introduced in 2019 and received a facelift for 2025, including a digital cockpit, camper control panel, and upgraded driver-assistance systems. For 2027, Volkswagen has focused on equipment, practicality, and making the range more accessible.
Dune Special Edition adds rugged styling
The new Dune Special Edition gives the Grand California a more utilitarian appearance. It combines Ascot Grey paint with an unpainted front bumper, matching plastic cladding along the sides and at the rear. Dune decals and black 17-inch Lismore alloy wheels complete the exterior changes.
LED headlights and daytime running lights are standard on the special edition. Fog lights and side marker lamps remain optional. Inside, the Dune includes Climatronic air conditioning, ambient lighting, a digital instrument cluster, and a 10.4-inch infotainment screen. A larger 12.9-inch display is available as an option.
Interior updates and optional off-grid power
Volkswagen has added Atami Bamboo trim to the 2027 Grand California, along with a matching hard-wearing wood-effect floor covering. Additional storage compartments and a foldout table also join the equipment list, adding to the camper’s practical interior layout.
The optional Off-Grid Package introduces solar panels and two 40Ah LiFePO4 batteries. Volkswagen says the batteries provide 40 percent greater capacity, allowing occupants to spend more time away from external power sources.
Two body lengths and one powertrain
The Grand California 600 measures 5.98 meters (235.4 inches) long, while the longer 680 extends to 6.80 meters (267.7 inches). Both versions include a kitchen, sleeping, living, and dining areas, as well as a compact bathroom with a shower.
That bathroom is one of the features distinguishing the Crafter-based Grand California from Volkswagen’s smaller California models, which are based on the Caddy, Transporter, Multivan, and ID. Buzz.
Power comes exclusively from a 2.0-liter turbodiesel producing 161 horsepower (120 kW/163 PS) and 410 Nm (302 lb-ft) of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels, while four-wheel drive is available with Volkswagen’s 4Motion system.
UK pricing starts lower for 2027
UK pricing has been reduced by £1,000 ($1,300) compared with the previous year. The Grand California 600 starts at £68,960 ($91,000), excluding VAT, while the 600 Dune Special Edition starts at £69,960 ($92,300).
The Grand California 680 begins at £71,440 ($94,300). At the top of the range, the 680 Dune Special Edition with 4Motion costs £79,160 ($104,400). The optional Off-Grid Package is priced at £1,450 ($1,900).
