Volkswagen has indefinitely paused development of the fully electric ninth-generation Golf, citing the company’s financial pressures and the need to secure funding for future investments. The decision was disclosed alongside Volkswagen Group’s results for the first nine months of 2026.

David Powels, chief financial officer of the Volkswagen brand and Brand Group Core, said development work on the future ID.Golf would be temporarily suspended while the company sharpens its priorities and addresses the challenging market environment.

Volkswagen’s current electric vehicles are reportedly seeing stronger demand, but Powels said their profit margins remain below those of combustion-engine models. The company is working to reduce product costs, improve economies of scale and establish a more competitive cost base for its electric lineup.

The ID.Golf timeline remains uncertain

The electric Golf had initially been expected to launch in 2028, but its development had already faced delays linked to software issues and Volkswagen’s focus on the upcoming Scalable Systems Platform, or SSP. Following the latest pause, the ID.Golf could now arrive sometime in the 2030s, although no new launch date has been confirmed.

The delay would extend the lifespan of the combustion-powered eighth-generation Golf, which debuted in late 2019 and received a mid-cycle update in early 2024. Volkswagen may also need to introduce further design and technology updates to keep the current model relevant if its successor remains several years away.

ID.3 Neo may also remain on its current platform

The electric ID.3 faces a similar situation. It entered production in 2019, received minor updates in 2023 and underwent a more substantial facelift in 2026, when it adopted the ID.3 Neo name.

Both the Golf and ID.3 Neo are expected to retain their existing MQB Evo and MEB platforms during this extended period. The more significant changes are reserved for their future SSP-based successors, which are set to use a new software architecture co-developed with Rivian.

Volkswagen Group reports weaker financial results

The ID.Golf pause comes as Volkswagen Group plans to reduce its lineup over the next several years and further cut its workforce. The source reports that as many as 50,000 additional positions could be eliminated, bringing total job reductions since 2024 to approximately 100,000.

For January through September 2026, the group’s net cash flow fell 67% to €1.434 billion, while operating profit declined 8.3% to €4.326 billion. Revenue decreased 0.5% to €106.417 billion, and vehicle sales slipped 0.5% to 3.753 million units.

The operating margin also narrowed from 4.4% during the same period a year earlier to 4.1%. Volkswagen Passenger Cars recorded a 1.8% sales decline, a 3% reduction in sales revenue, a 45% drop in operating profit and a 44% decrease in operating margin.
