A heavily modified SUV prototype may offer an early look at Toyota’s next vehicle architecture, which is designed to support electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Although the test vehicle resembles a Toyota Corolla Cross, several details indicate that it is not a conventional version of the existing SUV.

The prototype uses different headlights and has a noticeably shorter wheelbase than the production Corolla Cross. The current model’s wheelbase measures 103.9 inches, or 2,640 millimeters. The test vehicle also lacks visible exhaust outlets, while a frame can be seen beneath its floorpan.

A Corolla Cross-based development mule

The unusual appearance does not necessarily point to an electric version of the current Corolla Cross. Instead, the vehicle appears to be a development mule, using a heavily altered existing model while Toyota continues work on the underlying technology.

Mules are used when a manufacturer needs to test mechanical components before production-style prototypes are ready. In this case, the shortened body and other mismatched details may help conceal the final vehicle while allowing Toyota to evaluate its next-generation hardware.

Toyota’s multi-pathway platform

The prototype may be testing Toyota’s newly confirmed “multi-pathway” platform. Most of the automaker’s current unibody passenger cars and SUVs use versions of its TNGA architecture, while battery-electric models such as the bZ use the substantially different e-TNGA platform.

Toyota’s new approach is intended to support multiple powertrain types with a common hardware strategy rather than requiring separate vehicle architectures for combustion, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric models. The company expects that approach to make development and manufacturing more flexible as demand changes between powertrains.

The architecture could also create an opportunity for a fully electric Corolla, although the source does not identify the camouflaged vehicle as a confirmed Corolla EV or provide a production name.

New engines also planned for the architecture

Toyota says the new platform will not require one powertrain type to compromise for another. The company also expects hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles using the new technology to consume 15 percent less fuel.

The next-generation system will be paired with a new 1.5-liter inline-three engine. That engine is expected to replace Toyota’s current 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 1.8-liter inline-four engines in the relevant applications.

The new engines and platform are expected to reach the road next year. Additional sightings of development vehicles are likely before then, but Toyota has not identified the final production model represented by this prototype.
