A camouflaged prototype of the next-generation BMW X5 M has been spotted undergoing development testing near Germany’s Nürburgring. The high-performance SUV is expected to enter production in 2028 and could be offered with both a V8 engine and a fully electric powertrain.

The V8 model would serve as the flagship of the X5 range, while the electric version would top the related iX5 lineup. The battery-powered SUV is expected to compete with models including the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, Porsche Cayenne Electric, Lotus Eletre, and upcoming Audi RS Q6.

A more aggressive exterior

Although the prototype remains fully covered in camouflage, its proportions and visible details suggest a more aggressive design than the standard G65 X5 and the M60e xDrive. The changes appear to include chassis revisions, new wheels, and a dedicated M bodykit.

The prototype features deeper front and rear bumpers, black exterior trim, and a double rear spoiler. At the front, the wider kidney grille is paired with a more heavily sculpted hood that incorporates vents.

Its headlights and taillights appear to be provisional units, leaving open the possibility that the production model will receive distinct LED lighting graphics. The black five-spoke wheels seen on the test vehicle are also expected to be replaced by a more complex production design.

Sportier cabin and chassis hardware

The cabin is expected to retain the technology and practicality of the standard X5 while adding equipment and design elements from BMW’s M division. Reported changes include more heavily bolstered bucket seats, carbon-fiber trim, revised digital cockpit graphics, additional upholstery choices, and M branding throughout the interior.

Underneath, the prototype is fitted with larger brakes using drilled discs and six-piston calipers. A sharper adaptive suspension setup and revised steering are also expected to give the X5 M a more driver-focused character.

Electric model could produce around 900 horsepower

The electric X5 M is reportedly being developed with a quad-motor setup producing approximately 900 hp, or 671 kW and 912 PS. That figure would place it well above the electric X5 i60, which is listed at 570 hp, or 425 kW and 578 PS.

The outgoing X5 M and X6 M use a mild-hybrid twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 producing 617 hp, equivalent to 460 kW and 625 PS. The next V8-powered X5 M is expected to be more powerful, although it remains unclear whether it will match the performance of the electric version.

BMW has not yet released details about the next X5 M. Additional prototypes could provide a clearer view of the production SUV as development progresses and camouflage is reduced.
