A lightly camouflaged prototype has provided a closer look at BMW’s upcoming i3 Touring, an all-electric wagon joining the Neue Klasse lineup. The model was officially confirmed during the debut of the i3 sedan, with a full reveal expected in 2027.
The latest test vehicle wears camouflage over its front and rear sections while leaving much of the wagon’s overall shape visible. It appears to use 20-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers and the more aggressive bumpers associated with BMW’s M Sport trim.
Wagon body with i3 sedan design cues
The i3 Touring shares its front-end design with the closely related sedan, but adds a longer roof and sportier rear quarter windows. At the back, the elongated taillights and rear bumper appear similar to those used by the sedan, while the larger tailgate should provide more convenient access to the cargo area.
The wagon is also expected to provide greater rear headroom and more cargo capacity than the sedan. That could make it a suitable option for buyers who prefer a lower-slung wagon body and do not require the additional ground clearance offered by a taller vehicle.
Cabin and electric powertrains
Inside, the i3 Touring will inherit the sedan’s dashboard layout, including a 17.9-inch infotainment display, a four-spoke steering wheel and BMW’s Panoramic iDrive cockpit.
The powertrain range is expected to mirror the current i3 sedan lineup. The sedan is presently offered in two dual-motor variants, while single-motor versions are expected to join the range later.
The i3 40 xDrive produces 369 horsepower and uses an 82.8-kWh battery with a claimed WLTP range of 441 miles. The more powerful i3 50 xDrive develops 463 hp and has a 108.7-kWh battery, increasing its stated WLTP range to 567 miles.
The Touring’s additional weight and different aerodynamics are expected to reduce those range figures slightly, although final specifications for the wagon have not been provided.
Combustion-powered 3-Series Touring also expected
BMW is also developing a combustion-powered 3-Series Touring for the same segment. It is expected to share a similar exterior and interior design with the electric wagon, but its proportions will differ slightly because it is based on the CLAR platform rather than the Neue Klasse electric architecture.
The range is expected to include an M350 xDrive powered by a mild-hybrid turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 437 hp. However, the new-generation 3-Series lineup will not include diesel powertrains, which were previously popular among wagon buyers.
Further details on the i3 Touring, also known by its NA1 designation, and the 3-Series Touring, identified as the G51, are expected through additional spy images or official teasers in the coming months. Both wagons are expected to reach European roads in 2027.
