Smart has unveiled the production #2 at the Paris Motor Show, introducing an electric two-seater positioned as the direct successor to the Fortwo. The new model arrives six months after the Smart Concept #2 and retains the compact city-car formula while adopting a more restrained production design.
The original Smart debuted roughly 30 years ago, while the Fortwo was discontinued in 2024. The #2 measures 2,746 mm (108.1 inches) long, making it 51 mm (2 inches) longer than the last Fortwo and 246 mm (9.7 inches) longer than the original late-1990s Smart. Despite the added length, its curb-to-curb turning radius remains 6.95 meters (22.8 feet).
Production design and Couture Edition
Compared with the concept, the production car features revised headlight graphics, round taillights, smaller alloy wheels, conventional door handles, and simpler bumpers. The hood shut line sits higher on the nose, while the front bumper intakes no longer include the concept’s pixel screens. A body-colored grille mesh, floating roof, frameless windows, and split tailgate complete the exterior.
The range consists of Pure, Pure+, and Premium trims. Smart has also introduced the #2 Couture Edition, limited to 999 examples in Europe. It features a special grille cover inspired by a Louis Vuitton bag, additional front and rear aerodynamic extensions, an Atelier White Matte body, a Platinum Gold roof, and 16-inch Lyra wheels with gold accents. The bumper additions increase its overall length by 18 mm (0.7 inches).
Two-seat interior and standard equipment
The cabin includes a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, an 8.8-inch digital instrument display, round climate vents, a gadget-mounting base, and a three-spoke steering wheel with integrated controls. Bench-style seats contribute to the two-seat layout, while cargo capacity is listed at 305 liters (10.8 cubic feet).
Premium models come equipped with a glass roof, heated seats, faux-leather upholstery, and a seven-speaker Sennheiser sound system.
Rear-mounted motor and 290-kilometer range
The #2 was designed by Mercedes but uses Geely’s bespoke Electric Compact Architecture. Its rear-mounted electric motor produces 81 hp (60 kW) and 130 Nm (95.9 lb-ft) of torque. A 35.8-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery provides a claimed WLTP range of 290 km (180 miles), more than twice the 135-km (84-mile) range of the EQ Fortwo.
The battery supports 65-kW DC fast charging, with a 10-to-80 percent charge taking 20 minutes. Vehicle-to-load capability is also included.
Smart says the car has wider tracks, a low center of gravity, and a five-link rear suspension, which is described as unique within its segment. Safety equipment includes an updated Tridion Cell Evo structure and driver-assistance systems such as Pilot Assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, rear collision mitigation, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Pricing has not yet been disclosed. Autocar reports that the UK version could start at £17,900 ($23,700). In addition to Europe and the UK, the Smart #2 is expected to be sold in other markets, including China.
