McLaren has confirmed that production of the 750S will end in 2027, with final orders now being accepted for the British supercar. The decision marks the approaching end of a lightweight, non-hybrid model that has continued to compete against newer rivals with electrified powertrains.

Evolution of the 720S

The 750S is closely related to the McLaren 720S, which debuted at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show as the successor to the 650S. The 720S quickly established itself as a serious performance benchmark, outperforming the Lamborghini Huracan and Ferrari 488 GTB at launch and proving faster than the McLaren P1 at some racetracks.

McLaren retained the central concept of the 720S for the 750S, carrying over much of the design while upgrading its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Despite the additional development, the 750S weighs 66 pounds, or 30 kilograms, less than the 720S.

Limited 788HS marks the final special version

McLaren introduced the final high-performance version of the car in July with the 788HS. Production is limited to 200 examples, each using an upgraded engine producing 777 horsepower and 590 pound-feet, or 800 Nm, of torque.

The 788HS also receives visual and aerodynamic changes. Its limited production run and position as the final special version of the 750S could give the model particular appeal to collectors, although its future collectability has not been confirmed.

McLaren’s next model

The 750S is approaching the end of its life after nearly a decade based on the 720S formula. Meanwhile, rivals including the Lamborghini Temerario and Ferrari 296 GTB have adopted hybrid powertrains and offer more power. The 750S has nevertheless remained competitive through its combination of output and relatively low weight.

McLaren chief commercial officer Henrik Wilhelmsmeyer described the 750S as representing the brand’s focus on performance, driver engagement, technical development, design and personalization, adding that the model would leave an extraordinary legacy.

McLaren is also expected to discontinue the Artura in 2028. A future model known internally as the P34 is reported to be under development as a replacement for both cars. Reports indicate that it could use a newly developed twin-turbocharged hybrid V6 producing more horsepower and torque than the 750S.

That powertrain is also expected to make the P34 heavier. Whether the new model can reproduce the character associated with the 720S and 750S remains unresolved.
