Volkswagen has introduced the ID Tiguan as the successor to the ID 4 and ID 5, giving its electric SUV a more conventional design and a familiar name. The new model is built on the MEB+ platform and is expected to launch in North America, although a local arrival date has not been announced.

The ID Tiguan will be offered in three configurations using either a 58-kWh or 77-kWh battery. The entry-level version has rear-wheel drive, a 58-kWh battery, and 187 horsepower. A more powerful rear-wheel-drive model uses the larger battery and produces 282 hp.

The range will also include one all-wheel-drive model. Its 4MOTION system combines the 77-kWh battery with 295 hp. Volkswagen quotes a maximum WLTP range of 373 miles, or 600 kilometers, although the source indicates that figure is presumably associated with the 77-kWh rear-wheel-drive version and has not yet been confirmed.

Towing capacity varies by battery. The 58-kWh model can tow up to 3,968 pounds, while versions equipped with the 77-kWh pack are rated for up to 4,409 pounds.

A more conventional electric SUV design

The ID Tiguan adopts Volkswagen’s Pure Positive design language, separating it visually from the ID 4 and ID 5. Its front end features intricate LED daytime running lights and a full-width light bar, with black air intakes positioned low in the bumper instead of a traditional grille.

A pronounced shoulder line extends from the headlights across the doors and onto the tailgate. At the rear, the taillights use bold LED graphics connected by four narrow illuminated strips. The front and rear Volkswagen emblems are also illuminated.

Physical controls return to the cabin

Inside, Volkswagen has moved away from the touch-sensitive controls used in its outgoing vehicles. The new steering wheel includes physical buttons for cruise control and audio functions, while nine physical switches beneath the central air vents operate the climate system, including temperature and fan speed.

The dashboard incorporates a larger digital instrument display, which includes an optional-looking “Retro” theme with four traditional gauges. A larger infotainment screen is fitted, although its size has not been specified, and a passenger display will be available. The center console includes a volume knob and two wireless smartphone chargers.

Volkswagen says the ID Tiguan will offer available massaging, heated, and ventilated front seats, a Harman Kardon sound system, and a panoramic sunroof. A Digital Key will also allow owners to lock, unlock, and start the vehicle using a smartphone. The interior materials appear to be upgraded in some areas, though a final assessment is being reserved until the vehicle can be seen in person.

European sales timing

Pre-sales in Europe are scheduled to begin on October 13, with prices starting at €42,695, equivalent to $47,900. Deliveries are expected to begin early the following year. Volkswagen has confirmed the ID Tiguan will reach North America but has not yet disclosed when it will arrive there.
