Hyundai is developing at least two additional electric vehicles: an Ioniq 7 SUV positioned between the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9, and a smaller model that may be called the Ioniq 4.
The Ioniq 7 name was previously associated with Hyundai’s flagship electric SUV, which ultimately launched as the Ioniq 9. The new Ioniq 7 is expected to be closer in size to the Ioniq 5 than the larger Ioniq 9.
Ioniq 7 positioned between existing models
According to AutoExpress, the upcoming SUV could use an 800-volt electrical architecture, following the approach used by several other Hyundai EVs. It is also expected to be offered with either one or two electric motors, although Hyundai has not yet shown prototypes of the model testing on public roads.
Its anticipated dimensions could place it near the Chinese-built Elexio in size. In markets where both vehicles are sold, the Hyundai could compete for some of the same buyers. The Ioniq lineup is positioned as a more premium range, while the Elexio uses a 400-volt system and front-wheel drive.
A smaller SUV may join the lineup
Hyundai is also working on a more compact electric SUV that may receive the Ioniq 4 name. The model is expected to share a similar footprint with the new Ioniq 3 hatchback but would adopt a more conventional SUV body, placing it closer in concept to the Kia EV3.
The SUV is believed to feature a boxier and more upright design than the Ioniq 3. That change could give it broader appeal while creating additional interior space, making it potentially more practical for young families.
Hyundai will probably use the Ioniq 3’s battery packs and electric motors in the Ioniq 4. If that approach is followed, the smaller SUV would be offered with 42-kWh and 61-kWh battery options.
Neither model has yet been shown in testing, and the Ioniq 4 name remains unconfirmed. Together, the two projects would expand Hyundai’s electric SUV range above and below the Ioniq 5.
