Fiat has announced the Argo X, a new subcompact crossover hatchback for South America that will be based on the European Grande Panda. Despite sharing part of its name with Fiat’s existing Argo, the new model is unrelated to that car and will be sold alongside it in Brazil.

Grande Panda foundation, localized design

The Argo X will use the same Smart Car architecture as the Grande Panda, which has been sold in Europe since 2025 and shares its underpinnings with the Citroen C3. Earlier prototype sightings indicated the relationship between the two models, while Fiat’s teaser highlights the new vehicle’s lighting elements and Argo X badge.

Although the overall design will remain closely linked to the Grande Panda, the Brazilian model will receive different door and tailgate stampings. Those changes will remove the embossed Panda and Fiat branding found on the European model. Reports also indicate that the Argo X could use more restrained interior colors than its European counterpart.

Fiat’s local marketing division connects the model’s pixel-style lighting with an X-shaped design theme. The name also creates a similarity with the unrelated Toyota Aygo X, although Toyota’s crossover is not sold in South America.

Different engines and transmissions

The Argo X will not use the Grande Panda’s powertrain lineup. In Brazil, it will be offered with Fiat’s 1.0-liter Firefly and Turboflex engines, with the Turboflex receiving a 12-volt mild-hybrid system.

Power will be sent to the front wheels. Depending on the configuration, buyers will have a choice between a five-speed manual transmission and a continuously variable transmission.

Argo X to share the market with Argo

Fiat has confirmed that the Argo X is not intended to replace the Argo, which has been on sale since 2017 and received a mid-cycle update in 2022. The two vehicles will therefore remain available as separate options in Brazil’s subcompact segment.

Production of the Argo X will take place at the Stellantis Automotive Plant in Betim, Brazil, rather than at the Serbian facility that builds the Grande Panda. The model’s official debut is expected later this year, coinciding with Fiat’s 50th anniversary of operating in the region.

More Panda-based models may follow

Fiat is also expected to introduce additional members of the Panda family in Brazil. The Fiat Grizzly and Grizzly Fastback are reportedly next in line, although they could receive different names and locally adapted components.

The two larger sport utility vehicles could occupy a more upscale position and serve as indirect successors to the Pulse and Fastback. Fiat has not yet provided further details about those models.
