Although Subaru is a Japanese automaker, several of its vehicles are manufactured in the United States. Production takes place at Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana, where the company has built more than six million vehicles since the plant opened in 1989.

Subaru began selling vehicles in the United States in 1968, and demand grew significantly during the 1970s. That rising popularity eventually led the automaker to establish local production. Today, Subaru builds vehicles in Japan and the U.S., with the Indiana facility supplying several important models for the American market.

Subaru Ascent

The Ascent is the largest Subaru assembled in the United States. The three-row SUV is produced exclusively at the Indiana plant and is offered in seven- and eight-seat configurations.

Introduced in 2018 as a replacement for the Tribeca, the Ascent remains part of Subaru’s U.S. lineup. Sales through the first nine months of the year reached 32,556 vehicles, an increase of 3.9% compared with 2025.

Subaru Crosstrek

The Indiana facility also manufactures the Crosstrek, which is now in its third generation. The crossover has long been one of Subaru’s strongest sellers in the United States.

Subaru sold 142,725 Crosstrek models from January through September, making it the brand’s second-best-selling vehicle during that period, behind the Forester.

Subaru Forester

The Forester has only recently joined the Indiana plant’s production roster. Assembly of the new hybrid Forester began there in February, while production of the gasoline-powered version started locally about a year earlier.

Previous Forester generations were built in Japan, but Subaru recently added U.S. production to the model. The move followed the Outback’s return to Japanese production. The Outback had previously been manufactured in the United States.

Subaru also assembled the Legacy at the Indiana facility, but production of that sedan ended last September. With the Legacy no longer in local production and the Outback shifting back to Japan, the Ascent, Crosstrek, and Forester are the Subaru models currently identified as being built at the U.S. plant.
