Xpeng has unveiled its flagship G9L SUV at the Paris Motor Show, introducing European buyers to a model offered with both battery-electric and range-extender powertrains. The SUV will start at €74,600 in Germany, while pricing in France, Austria, and the Netherlands will range from €74,990 to €75,990.

The G9L is positioned below the price of larger premium SUVs such as the BMW X5. It is also intended for markets beyond Europe, with Xpeng planning sales in 64 countries and regions, including Australia and New Zealand. Production is set to take place at Xpeng’s facility in China and at Magna Steyr’s factory in Austria.

Range-extender version

The range-extender model combines a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four engine with an electric motor and a 63-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery. The system produces 577 horsepower and 513 pound-feet (695 Nm) of torque, enabling a claimed 0-to-62-mph (100-km/h) time of 5.4 seconds.

Xpeng says the G9L EREV can cover up to 270 miles (435 km) using electric power alone. Its claimed combined range reaches 996 miles (1,602 km) on the CLTC testing cycle.

The gasoline engine does not drive the wheels. Instead, it generates electricity for the electric powertrain, allowing the SUV to retain the smooth acceleration associated with a battery-electric vehicle. The system is designed to prioritize electric operation in urban driving and activate the range extender when required on highways. Regenerative braking is also included.

Two battery-electric versions

Xpeng has also announced two fully electric configurations. Entry versions will use a 91.9-kWh battery, while higher-specification models will receive a 110-kWh pack.

The most powerful electric version uses two motors with the same 577-hp and 695-Nm output quoted for the range-extender model. Its WLTC range is listed at up to 344 miles (553 km), although the additional performance reduces efficiency compared with less powerful versions.

The G9L supports DC charging at rates of up to 540 kW. Xpeng says this allows the battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent in less than 12 minutes.

Assisted driving and luxury equipment

The SUV includes Xpeng’s latest intelligent driving systems, including assisted driving for city streets and highways, navigation-based assistance, and hands-free lane changes.

Inside, the front seats are trimmed in Nappa leather and offer heating, ventilation, and 16-point massage functions. The second row can be configured with either a bench or captain’s chairs, with both layouts receiving the same heating, ventilation, and massage functions. Third-row passengers get heated seats, while the rear seats fold in a 50:50 split.

Other equipment includes a 17.3-inch central infotainment screen, an 88-inch augmented-reality head-up display, dual wireless charging pads, and a 26-speaker audio system. A 12.5-liter refrigerator and a fold-down 21.4-inch screen for second-row passengers are also available.
