Subaru is preparing to end sales of combustion-powered and hybrid vehicles in Europe by the close of 2027, leaving the region with an all-electric lineup beginning in 2028.

Subaru Germany confirmed the shift to Auto Motor und Sport, pointing to increasingly strict European Union emissions rules and rising requirements for driver assistance and safety systems. The cost of adapting the existing range to those standards is reportedly too high to justify continuing with every current model.

Combustion models will leave in stages

The first major departure will be the Outback, which is scheduled to exit the European market before the end of this year. The remaining combustion-powered models are expected to follow in 2027.

That group includes the Impreza, Crosstrek, and Forester. Although all three currently use hybridized four-cylinder powertrains, they will also be discontinued in the region under the new strategy. Subaru’s European withdrawal therefore applies not only to conventional gasoline vehicles but also to its current hybrids.

The decision means established nameplates such as the Outback, Crosstrek, and Impreza will no longer be part of Subaru’s European showroom once the transition is complete. The company is reportedly open to bringing hybrids back if market or regulatory conditions change.

Three EVs will make up the European range

From 2028, Subaru’s European lineup will consist of the Solterra, the Uncharted, and the E-Outback. The three models occupy different parts of the market rather than following a single body style.

The Uncharted is described as a hot hatch-like model available with front-wheel drive, while an all-wheel-drive version is also offered. The Solterra and E-Outback both come standard with all-wheel drive, but differ significantly in body design and cargo capacity.

Subaru’s move does not currently apply to the United States. The source notes that the regulatory environment there is changing, with EPA requirements becoming less restrictive and penalties for failing to meet those rules no longer applying in the same way. As a result, the European lineup transition is not presently expected to affect American buyers.

For European customers, however, Subaru is committing to an electric-only showroom after 2027. Whether the three-model EV range can replace the brand’s long-standing mix of combustion and hybrid vehicles will depend on how buyers respond to the change.
