A mysterious Subaru WRX prototype spotted testing at the Nürburgring features an unusual extended rear design, prompting questions about whether the automaker is developing a new special edition, an aerodynamic package, or a possible clue to the long-awaited WRX STI.

The current-generation WRX has been on sale for five years, during which Subaru has introduced several limited-edition variants in markets including Japan and the United States. However, the range still lacks a proper STI model.

Unusual rear-end design

At the front, the black prototype appears broadly unchanged from the regular WRX. It retains the familiar grille, bumper, air intakes, and large hood scoop, with little visible indication of a major performance upgrade.

The rear is significantly different. Additional panels have been fitted to the rear quarter areas and extend outward to approximately the same width as the taillights. A new lip spoiler also spans between the extended sections, giving the sedan an unusual longtail-like appearance.

The design could be related to aerodynamic testing, although Subaru has not identified the purpose of the revised bodywork. The approach is notably different from the large fixed rear wings typically associated with high-performance WRX variants and a potential future STI. A small section of camouflage is also visible around a distinctive rear diffuser.

No clear STI hardware visible

The rest of the prototype does not appear to carry the hardware expected from a higher-performance STI model. The car lacks visibly enlarged air intakes and does not show larger brakes. In fact, the prototype appears not to use the beefier Brembo calipers fitted to the regular model.

That visual evidence makes it unclear whether the car has any additional engine power. The unusual rear treatment could instead be connected to another limited-edition WRX, an optional body package for the standard car, or aerodynamic development that may not lead directly to a production model.

Manual transmission returns in Japan

The prototype was photographed shortly after Subaru announced the return of a manual transmission option for the standard WRX in Japan. That gearbox is separate from the TY75 six-speed manual used in the U.S.-market model and is instead the TY85 transmission previously associated with the earlier-generation WRX STI.

Subaru’s continued development of the current WRX suggests the model remains an active focus for the company. However, the unusual prototype does not confirm that a new STI is in development, and the purpose of its extended rear bodywork remains unknown.
