Jaguar has unveiled the Type 01 in New York, introducing the electric vehicle that will anchor the brand’s shift toward an all-electric lineup. The production model closely follows the striking Type 00 concept while adding two doors and slightly more restrained bodywork.
The Type 01 is built on Jaguar’s new Electric Architecture (JEA), with a 118-kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery and an 850-volt electrical system. Its charging hardware supports up to 350 kW, allowing the battery to move from 10 to 80 percent in 22 minutes.
Three electric motors provide a combined 1,015 horsepower and 1,007 pound-feet of torque. Jaguar has not yet released performance figures, although the output places the Type 01 among the brand’s most powerful road cars. The company quotes an EPA-estimated driving range of 400 miles.
A design derived from the Type 00 concept
The Type 01 takes a markedly different approach from Jaguar’s previous production models. Its front end forgoes a conventional grille, using small gloss-black openings low in the bumper instead. A large charging port on the driver-side front fender distinguishes the production vehicle from the concept, though its placement stands out against the otherwise clean design.
The car has a high shoulder line, low roof, and narrow side windows. A panoramic glass roof extends across the cabin and covers all four seats. Other exterior details include large multi-spoke wheels, flush door handles, and conventional side mirrors. Like the Type 00 concept, the Type 01 does not have a rear window.
A minimalist interior
Jaguar has given the cabin its own unconventional layout. The two-spoke steering wheel uses large touch surfaces for functions including phone and audio controls, while a 24-inch digital instrument display handles vehicle information and navigation.
Rather than relying on a large central tablet-style screen, the Type 01 uses a smaller seven-inch portrait-oriented display mounted in the central spine. That screen controls climate and audio functions. The vehicle also replaces a conventional rear-view mirror with a ClearSight Rear View Display positioned at the base of the windshield.
The minimalist approach leaves the interior with relatively few physical switches. The cabin does, however, include a 38-speaker audio system.
Pricing and timing
Jaguar is expected to open Type 01 order books early next year, with customer deliveries anticipated during the second half of the year. UK pricing will begin at £130,000, while US pricing is expected to start at approximately $130,000.
