The Ineos Grenadier is entering military service after Italy and Austria placed substantial orders for the off-roader. The contracts represent the model’s first agreements with sovereign defense forces, while Ineos continues pursuing additional government and military opportunities across Europe.

Italy’s Army is expected to begin receiving Grenadiers in early 2027. Ineos has not disclosed the size or value of the Italian contract, but says the country is the first NATO member to place a sizable military order for the SUV.

Austria to receive modified Grenadiers

The Austrian vehicles will be supplied through Valentin Tusch GmbH, a company specializing in vehicle armoring and conversions. It won a government tender to provide Grenadiers for Austria’s defense and interior security forces.

The Austrian examples will receive additional protection and other modifications. Initial deliveries and trials are scheduled to begin before the end of this year, according to the supplied information.

Traditional off-road design

The Grenadier’s construction includes a ladder-frame chassis, solid axles, permanent four-wheel drive, and relatively straightforward mechanical design. Those characteristics could make the vehicle easier to maintain and repair in demanding field conditions, while its overall design is intended to withstand extended harsh use.

Ineos is also leading the Team Grenadier consortium in a bid for the British Ministry of Defence’s Light Mobility Vehicle program. That proposal has reached the trials stage, leaving the Grenadier in contention for use as a light military vehicle by Britain’s armed forces.

The automaker says it is in advanced procurement discussions with other European and NATO militaries, though it has not identified those potential customers. Beyond military contracts, Grenadiers are already being used by police, border patrol, emergency rescue, and special forces organizations in various countries.

Those government users include tactical and counterterrorism units in Germany, France, and Spain. Security and border agencies in Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Serbia, and Slovakia have also adopted the Grenadier.
