A Bizzarrini GT America 2+2 prototype displayed at the 1968 Turin Motor Show is set to go under the hammer, with an estimated value of $400,000 to $500,000. The rare grand tourer will be offered at Broad Arrow’s Audrain Auction in Newport, Rhode Island, on October 2.
Turin show prototype
Bizzarrini produced approximately 140 cars during its five-year production history after being founded in 1964. This GT America prototype has changed ownership several times and underwent a restoration in 2008.
The car is finished in Champagne Metallic and uses aluminum bodywork. Its exterior details include chrome bumpers, metallic trim, magnesium wheels, and vents in the front fenders. The design also features what appear to be pop-up headlights, circular taillights, and four exhaust outlets.
Two-seat rear compartment
Inside, the prototype combines brown leather upholstery with a restrained dashboard layout. Traditional gauges sit behind a wood-rimmed steering wheel, while toggle switches, power windows, and a grab handle for the front passenger add period-specific equipment.
Its 2+2 configuration is centered on a rear compartment with two individual seats divided by a broad center console. Available legroom appears limited, making the rear area better suited to small children than adults.
5.4-liter V8 and manual transmission
Power comes from a 327-cubic-inch, or 5.4-liter, V8 engine producing approximately 355 horsepower (265 kW/360 PS). The engine is paired with a four-speed manual transmission that drives the rear wheels.
The chassis equipment includes disc brakes, independent front suspension, and a de Dion rear axle. Together with its aluminum construction and distinctive four-seat layout, those details form the basis of this unusual Bizzarrini prototype’s appeal.
The GT America 2+2 will cross the auction block at the Audrain event with a presale estimate of $400,000 to $500,000.
